Safe sex may–or the choice to have it–may soon be in short supply experts are reporting. Condoms may be harder to find as more and more Americans are ordered to quarantine and remain home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some experts are even predicting a “coronavirus baby boom” further proving everyone is NOT practicing social distancing.

Hints of heightened interest in condoms first emerged last month in China, where the virus was first reported.

Condomsales.com reported March 3 that stores were seeing “shortages in Singapore and Hong Kong.” The e-commerce platform Pinduoduo noted quarantine measures in China fueled a jump in sales of condoms and hair clippers, according to abacusnews.com.

One reason for the condom rush in Asia: Some people were wearing them on their fingers, after rumors spread on social media the practice could protect you from the coronavirus, The Mirror reported.

It’s coincidental, but also important that hard-hit Asia is home to “the world’s largest condom maker,” the Karex company in Malaysia, according to Forbes. Any slowdown in manufacturing there could have global implications.

Condom sales have reportedly been increasing in the United States since coronavirus cases were first diagnosed on the West Coast, where a growing number of shelter-in-place orders are in place.

Such orders bind Americans to their homes, except in cases of “essential business” and health needs.

Seven million people are currently under a three-week shelter order in the San Francisco Bay area, and large urban areas like New York City are reportedly considering it, McClatchy News reported this week.

The betting odds site SportsBettingDime.com went so far as to release odds of a Trojan condom stock boom amid the pandemic. “You can bet on the population getting down to business while stuck inside their homes for the next couple of months,” the site says.

Dr. Mehmet Oz told TMZ couples should have sex while they’re quarantined. “You’ll live longer, get rid of the tension. … Maybe you’ll make some babies.”

baby boomers

Baby Boomers

A jump in birth rates is actually normal after emergencies and natural disasters. Think of the Baby Boomers (via investopedia.com, a term used to describe a person who was born between 1946 and 1964. The baby boomer generation makes up a substantial portion of the world’s population, especially in developed nations. It represents nearly 20% of the American public.) the as of now, largest generation of Americans to date born after World War II, “It’s probably going to be the biggest baby boom we’ve seen,” Dr. Kevin Kathrotia of Millennium Neonatology told FOX Business on Monday. “Anytime there’s the threat of a hurricane, there’s a little baby boom. … There’s going to be kids in nine months, I can assure you.”

Well it looks like the world will be getting a lot more Sagittarians and Capricorns. Christmas really will be “Merry Christmas Baby!”

Many of these fights were recorded by spectators and involved dozens of young and primarily Black Gay Men, who in turn posted the videos of social media. The reaction to these aforementioned videos has been largely an outcry denouncing the entire piecemailed event and feeling that there was no “pride” to be held in the gathering. Some have even called for there to a formal council to oversee future official and ORGANIZED Black Gay Prides in Atlanta.

Check out a few of these fights below:

We really hate to see there was so much violence this weekend. Black and gay people are among the most oppressed people on the planet, and to see them fight so much is just disheartening. More than ever before the Black LGBT community should be banding together.

Personally, we feel it was highly irresponsible for them to have an event of any kind during this pandemic. Lives are in danger. We remember years ago Freaknik went to similarly awry and was eventually and permanently done away with. Guys, let’s do better!

Representation and diversity are more important than ever in today’s political and social climate. Systemic racism still pervades every aspect of our society and that includes our entertainment.

In fact, the Marvel Comics based video game, “Marvel Future Fight,” is being accused of “whitewashing” X-Men’s Storm, giving her much lighter skin and more Caucasian features including thinner nose and lips.

Some fans are even saying she resembles actress Charlize Theron instead of the Black superhero the world knows her as. Storm, in the comics, is of African and African-American descent, hailing from Kenya. The character naturally and traditionally has blue eyes and white hair, passed down from all of her female ancestors.

This is not the first time Storm’s complexion and features have been met with criticism. Earlier this year in the comics, issues of colorism arose when she was shown as light skinned and with altered features making her barely recognizable. Also, both of her live action actresses, Halle Berry and Alexandria Shipp, have been lighter skinned Black women causing controversy.

Storm is arguably the most popular Black superhero on the planet, having risen to prominence in 1975 in Giant-Size X-Men. There, she and a host of new, multicultural X-Men rescued the original X-Men–Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman–from a living island known as Krakoa. Since then at various times she has served as a leader of the team and even became the Queen of Wakanda when she married Black Panther.

We are open to different interpretations of Storm, but to alter her complexion or ethnicity is problematic. There still are not nearly as many superheroes of color in mainstream media and her role as a dark-skinned and powerful Black woman makes her character all the more necessary.

Marvel Future Fight has yet to respond to the gamers’ outrage, we will keep you posted as this story continues to unfold.
