For over the past decade some of the world’s top grossing films have featured the greatest superheroes. Usually they consists of top tier heroes from Marvel (The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, etc.) and DC Comics (The Justice League, Teen Titans, Doom Patrol, etc.) It seems Netflix is now cashing in on the superhero craze, bringing the hit British comic book series, The Umbrella Academy to the Silver Screen!

The series centers on seven adoptive siblings–six with super powers, and one powerless–adopted by an eccentric billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves/The Monocle (Colm Feore) to train them in hopes of deterring crime. However, the heroic family is highly dysfunctional, each sibling suffering with their set of problems, all emotionally scarred by their father’s cold and distant nature. To save the world they will each have to overcome their distrust and shortcomings, band together, and stop an impending apocalypse!

Grade: A+

What We Liked

-We liked the array of super powers each character has. The only teams that have more unique sets, we dare say, are The X-Men and Doom Patrol!

-The acting was completely on point. These actors really do come off like a set of squabbling siblings. Your entire sibling archetype is there, from the dominant older son/responsible daughter to your middle children crying out for attention, and lastly the overlooked child, or black sheep.

Mary J. Blige as a kick ass assassin! You have never seen Mary in a role like this before and it truly suits her. “Cha Cha” we love you!

What We Loved

Mary J. Blige as “Cha Cha”

-The girl power! From Rumor and White Violin’s (Ellen Page) powers to the Time Bureau director and Cha Cha’s ruthlessness these women will keep you watching!

-The formula for this series! If you haven’t taken notice two of the biggest franchises in superhero history, The Fantastic Four and The Incredibles involve superheroes in a dysfunctional family kind of setting. It makes the characters way more realistic and relatable.

-Five is the character to watch! He is interwoven throughout this entire story arc. His powers warn him of the apocalypse and as you will see, they may very well avert it,

-Allison/Rumor’s  (Emmy Raver-Lampman) consequences and guilt for using her powers on her young daughter. It really brings full circle the whole “with great power comes great responsibility.” This also includes consequences when one acts irresponsibly.

-The development of Klaus/Seance’s (Robert Sheehan) powers is definitely a coming of age story as he overcomes his fears and begins to embrace his full potential.

-The love story between Luther/Spaceboy and Allison/Rumor is truly a new take on Beauty and The Beat, albeit with the unethical romance between two adoptive siblings.

What We Hated

-Nothing, Netflix you did this!

As you may already know the cast currently consists of Doctors Jackie Walter, Simone Whitmore, Contessa Metcalfe, and Heavenly Kimes; doctors’ wives Mariah Huq, Toya Bush-Harris, and ex-doctor’s wife, Quad Webb Lunceford. Now sources close to the show are alleging Mariah Huq, who executive produced and created the franchise and was a full-time cast member on most seasons has been ousted from the show and Quad has been demoted to being a “friend of the show,” while retaining her “full cast member” salary.

Mariah and Quad were originally the heart and soul of the show, “frick and frack” if you will. We are aware that Quad’s divorce from psychiatrist, Dr. Gregory Lunceford, finalized last year disqualifying her from being “Married To Medicine;” but Mariah is still married to Dr. Aydin Huq. Earlier today Mariah went forward to say she is being ousted from the show for racist reasons, alleging Bravo is treating her differently other franchise starters.

Mariah Huq

I’m the first African-American woman to create a franchise at Bravo. I’m one of three people. It’s me, it’s Lisa Vanderpump that created Vanderpump Rules, and Whitney Sudler that did ‘Southern Charm.’ They’re still with their franchises. They’re still a part of [them]. Why would I not be?

We love both Quad and Mariah, but we understand the former’s demotion. As for Mariah, we love her on the show. Her one-liners, feuds with Dr. Heavenly, and and larger than life personality are to die for! Bravo might want to take her coming forward with these assertions seriously. This is the wrong time to be against any Black Woman trying to maintain her rightful place.

Network television faces an unprecedented event as the 2020-2021 fall television line up on most channels seems uncertain.

The closest analogy to the current situation would be past writers strikes, which forced networks to find creative ways to program their schedules. That has included everything from acquiring existing series produced abroad to offering shows that were made for sister networks. As the Hollywood Reporter noted, for example, during the 2008 strike CBS aired edited reruns of Showtime’s “Dexter.”
In any normal year, billions are invested in the fall network-TV lineup, with the great unknown being what series might break through and which ones will flop. This year, due to the novel coronavirus, those traditional concerns have given way to new dimensions of uncertainty.
The irony of it all is that people have been watching more TV than in some time. After steadily declining ratings, stay-at-home orders have boosted network viewing, despite the competition from streaming services and other alternatives.
Even as those orders are relaxed and more people venture out, continuing anxiety about Covid-19 and the major job losses associated with the crisis likely means more people will choose to stay home and watch TV as entertainment, both for financial and safety reasons.
During its streaming presentation, NBCUniversal chief of advertising and partnerships Linda Yaccarino conceded that there is “not a lot of visibility into the future,” while promoting a variety of ways that NBC can help sponsors get their messages across.
One of the biggest challenges facing primetime TV, meanwhile, is outside of the networks’ control: NFL football, which has announced a fall schedule, but will leave gaping holes in NBC and Fox’s lineups on Sunday and Thursday nights, respectively, if it’s not able to proceed as planned.
Similarly, NBCUniversal president of ad sales Laura Molen noted that viewers were “still going to be able to cry through the next season of ‘This is Us.'” But like virtually everything surrounding industry right now, that’s a promise that NBC might not be able to keep.

NBC’s “This Is Us” Cast

From what we have gathered, television specials and reality television may be the saving grace for programming this fall. The former only require editing and interviews, while the latter is cheaper to produce in mass and requires smaller crews. In all actuality this may be the rise of YouTube and web series adapted to television. In the meanwhile, Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu do not seem to be lacking on any programming at all, even then they have an extensive library to pull from.
Here’s hoping Fall TV is worthwhile..

Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” Reveals Final Season Premiere Date & Emotional BTS Farewell

Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” has been one of the most riveting shows of our lives tackling issues of suicide, rape, toxic masculinity, homophobia, bullying, and in the last season–murder!

We have watched the show transition from Hannah’s story, to Clay’s story, and finally to Bryce’s story in the previous season. Now, in the fourth and final season of the series we are left to wonder how will everyone deal with Bryce’s death–he was after all a serial rapist who seemed to be on track to some kind of redemption–if that’s possible.

Now, Netflix has not only revealed the fourth and final season premiere date of “13 Reasons Why,” but released a behind the scenes farewell video from the cast that get quite emotional.

13 reasons why season 4

This video (shown above) really has us emotional, and in fact reminds us just how invested we are in the show and its characters. We have seen everything that’s happened and all the triumphs and trials are so human and induce vulnerability in self and thought.

13 reasons why season 4

The series returns with only ten episodes, shorter than its usual length. The tagline of the series reads, “In the series’ final season, Liberty High School’s Senior Class prepares for graduation. But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.”

This whole situation sounds like it could turn out similar to “Murder On The Orient Express” where everyone is on the crime and somehow it gets swept under the rug. It is graduation time for the kids, and although we will miss them  I am sure these set of characters is ready to move on.

Does anyone else besides us think their twenty year high school reunion is going to quite the spectacle? 2041 here we come!

What are your hopes for the upcoming season of “13 Reasons Why?” Sound off in the comments’ section below!
