"…if we never do another album, I’m totally fine with that…" Andre 3000 Speaks On Possible Retirement!

Aquemini, Stankonia, ATLiens, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below–these are the albums we grew to know and love thanks to a pair of cool, trendy, and offsetting rappers that made up the dynamic duo of Outkast! There has never been a time when we were not happy to hear one of their tunes anywhere, you could always feel a little piece of Atlanta with you no matter where you were.

Well that feeling might just end as it seems Andre 3000 has hinted he is retiring from rapping!

In an interview with Complex, the Atlanta icon sat down to discuss his inspirations for the collection and his current attitude towards creating music…

During the conversation, André 3000 said that he’s more motivated by the collaborative processes of acting and fashion design, as opposed to making music. “I work better with other people,” he said. “I clearly see that now. Like, I haven’t put out an album in years, but if Frank Ocean or Travis Scott calls and says, ‘Hey, man, I want you to be a part of this,’ it’s like I have a goal, a target. When I’m on my own, I’m sitting around twiddling my thumbs.”

Despite this realization, he said that the thought of a new album with his oldest collaborator, Big Boi, still doesn’t inspire him to get behind the mic. “It’s really just an excitement thing, and where I am in life,” he explained. “I kind of like not being a part of [rap], now that I’ve done it…Even with Outkast — if we never do another album, I’m totally fine with that. When I was 25, I said I don’t want to be a 30-year-old rapper. I’m 42 now, and I feel more and more that way.”

We really hope Andre is not leaving the game! He is one of rap’s most creative and legendary rappers. Music just got a little less interesting…

[REVIEW] Nostalgically LIT! “Noah’s ARC: The ‘Rona Chronicles” We NEEDED You!

It is hard to believe it has been fifteen years since Patrik-Ian Polk’s “Noah’s ARC” first debuted on LOGO TV Network.

Since then Noah’s ARC has spawned two iconic seasons, an independent film, and now a reunion centered on the affects of the coronavirus pandemic on Noah, Wade, Alex, Ricky, and Chance–“Noah’s ARC: The “Rona Chronicles!”

Needless to say this reunion was right on time and just what we needed during these trying times. A true breath of fresh air! The show was preceded by a pre-show and collection of well wishes with notable Black LGBT stars and fans of the original Noah’s ARC since its early 2000’s inception. The show paved the way for a number of Black LGBT productions like Pose, About Him, Twenties, and so many others.

The show paved the way for a number of Black LGBT productions like Pose, About Him, Twenties, and so many others.

noah's arc the rona chronicles

The show centers on our motley cast dealing with the overcast of the coronavirus pandemic. Noah tells Alex he and Wade are at odds over a “situation” between him and three friends, meanwhile he has life altering news he needs to share with his crew. Alex’s son OJ is now identifying as non-binary, while his husband Trey struggles to deal with being a medic witnessing the onslaught of the pandemic. Chance now lives in Mississippi with a new position at a new college, while his husband and stepdaughter, Eddie and Kenya (all grown up and beautiful), are in Florida caring for the other’s aging mother. Finally, Ricky is STILL Ricky, trying to find safe ways to hook up with guys during the pandemic, while possibly reconnecting with his former love, Junito.

noah's arc the rona chronicles

The show’s format was based on Zoom calls, allowing them to safely film the series while being true and entertaining to the source content of the series. The guys have all aged well and you can tell they were happy to be back in the swing of things. The timing of this reunion is everything AND creative. Mainstream television had the right idea with rebooting its older series and Patrik has the right idea with bringing back this amazing cast of actors.

There is a real lack of positive and quality Black LGBT content in media nowadays and The ‘Rona Chronicles may be what we need to satiate and fill this empty space. Welcome back guys you were all missed–dearly!

What We Liked

-Seeing the entire main cast back together, including Brandy (Jennia Fredrique) and Junito (Wilson Cruz), making this project happen.

-Wade and Noah are still together and HAPPY.

-The dynamic of Noah and his ARC are still there. The chemistry, the way they play off each other, and their sense of family and community are as strong as ever.

-The show addressed the dangers and effects of the coronavirus pandemic. It really lets audiences know we are all in this together!

What We Loved

-Wade and Noah are going to be daddies!!! It’s the natural evolution of their relationship and family. This kid is going to be an amazing mix of both his/her fathers and we cannot wait!

-Alex is truly MAMA! Everything he does is a hoot, but we love him nonetheless.

-Meeting Wade’s father and Alex’s brother! It was good to see more family in the mix. Wade’s father definitely set him straight–in a parenting sense, and the duet with Alex and his brother of “Don’t Lose This Feeling That We Have” from “The Wiz” was EVERYTHING!

-The inclusion of Black Lives Matter issues and police brutality. RIP Rayshard Brooks!

-Brandon Karson, formerly of “About Him,” making an appearance on the show! It was a shocker, but well received! Check out his involvement with the series in a brief interview below:

What We Hated

-We didn’t get to see Alex’s child, OJ!

-What happened to Brandon (Gary LeRoi Gray) from “Noah’s ARC: Jumping The Broom?” We need an update!

In a last minute, and surprising decision, The CW has opted to cancel its late season series, the “Riverdale” spinoff, “Katy Keene!”

The series starred former “Pretty Little Liars” starlet, Lucy Hale as the titular character with her three friends, singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), drag queen and performer Jorge “Ginger” Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp), and the street smart budding entrepreneur, Pepper Smith (Julia Chan) as they all pursue their dreams on the mean streets of New York City.

Lucy actually broke down over the cancellation going on to Instagram to voice her hurt.

Ashleigh and Jonny have yet to comment, but Julia Chan posted her feelings about the show as well.

Modest ratings are the alleged blame for the series’ cancellation, which unlike its parent series, “Riverdale” and Archie Comics-related show, “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” took a brighter stance with the portrayal of its characters.

The show is actually the only series on The CW not to be renewed for a new season. The creator of the show is looking for a new home for the series which we are hoping will be HBO Max–where episodes are currently in syndication. At least there the show can have a bigger budget and perhaps a little “Sex & The City” maturity added to its already amazing New York feng shui.

We are really going to miss “Katy Keene!” It had become one of our favorite shows on television. We are praying this is not the end. Where’s the petition to sign! SAVE KATY KEENE!

The Atlanta University Center is preparing–at least partially–to reopen this fall when it comes to HBCUs, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University. The three institutions revealed their plans to reopen this Fall with a few accommodations and practices in place to ward off the spread of COVID-19 on their campuses.

Clark Atlanta University (CAU), Spelman College, and Morehouse College revealed their respective upcoming semesters have been largely changed and adapted to ensure new and returning students, staff and the surrounding neighborhoods and communities are safe during the ongoing pandemic. In addition, these changes will included mandatory COVID-19 tests, temperature tracking and wearing masks.

Clark Atlanta University

Below are the plans for the schools:

Clark Atlanta University:

  • Students and staff will have to be tested for COVID-19 prior to returning to campus
  • Face coverings will be mandatory while on campus
  • Daily temperature checks upon arrival to campus for all administrators, faculty and staff
  • Freshmen and sophomores will attend classes on campus in classrooms that have been reconfigured based on recommended guidelines by the CDC.
  • Juniors, seniors, and graduate students will remain home and take all of their courses online. Juniors and seniors who will live in residential halls as ambassadors/mentors will also take their courses online
  • Classes will occur on a Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday schedule. No classes will be held on Wednesdays to allow for the sanitizing and deep cleaning of offices, classrooms, residential halls, dining facilities, and labs
  • There will be an abbreviated academic calendar that will shorten the fall and spring semesters to ensure that students can travel home to spend time with their families and avoid having to return to school after Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks
  • All classrooms and residential halls have been sanitized, and the university has increased the cleaning staff to ensure that classrooms and residential buildings are regularly cleaned.

Morehouse College

  • Classes will be held in a hybrid setting, with some classes gathering for in-person instruction and virtual teaching and learning, and others meeting online only
  • The academic calendar has been modified to help make sure that students will return home before winter flu season. The Fall 2020 Semester will end before Thanksgiving. There will be no fall break. Final exams will be held between Nov. 16-20
  • Move-in for freshman and transfer students will be held from Aug. 16-17. Move-in for upperclassmen will be held on Aug. 18
  • Each student in a traditional residential house and Otis Moss Suites East will have their own room
  • Additional hand-sanitizing stations have been added in high traffic areas

Dr. David A. Thomas, president of Morehouse College, also released a letter reiterating the aforementioned guidelines and adaptions for the upcoming school year, and reassuring returning students, new students, faculty, and staff of the insitutions commitment to safety. “Morehouse is known for its strength as a community. Since 1867, we have been educating men who are dedicated to academic excellence, leadership, and service. That historic legacy will not be disrupted now. We are committed to maintaining the quality and continuity of our academic program regardless of whether our students are on campus or learning remotely. We will continue to monitor the very fluid path of the COVID-19 pandemic and make adjustments to our safety and academic plans as needed. It is imperative that every member of the Morehouse Community adhere to the guidelines that we have established. With your collaboration and pride in the community, the 2020-21 academic year will be a success for our new and returning students.”

Spelman College

At Spelman a low-density hybrid model, including both in-person and online instruction will be adopted for how classes will be conducted for the foreseeable future. The college will also be reopening in four phases, each taking place during various times of the academic year.

Phase 1

  • onboarding COVID-19 awareness and precaution training modules
  • increasing cleaning and sanitizing regimen
  • ordering personal protection equipment (PPE)
  • setting up COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and symptom monitoring
  • creating signage about face covering, physical distancing and hand washing
  • determining measures for isolation, quarantine and resurgence; size limitations of on-campus classes and meetings; and guest visitation protocol.

Phase 2

The second phase of the reopening will begin on August 1, 2020, prior to the start the fall semester on Aug. 19, 2020. During this phase, Spelman’s on-campus presence will include first-year students, who make up between 25-30 percent of the student body. ROTC students will also be given on-campus housing preference due to the requirement that they engage in early daily military practices in Atlanta.

Spelman’s aforementioned low-density hybrid model allows students and staff to have ongoing access to online course materials, while allowing some students, and faculty and staff members to return to campus in the fall.

Phases 3 and 4

Phase three is set to begin on February 1, 2021. Here, students living on campus will include freshmen students and graduating seniors.

The College plans to begin its final phase of reopening during Fall 2021. However, getting to this final part will  depend on COVID-19 being contained or a vaccine readily available, according to Sharon Davies, the vice president for academic affairs, “Last spring taught us that no matter how well we plan, the realities of this pandemic may require us act swiftly to change course,” she said. “This means that any plan to reopen must be able to flex and pivot as evolving conditions demand. We will watch these health conditions carefully and respond accordingly.”

We are glad to see these colleges are taking this seriously. It really shows just how committed they are to the safety of everyone on campus and the surrounding areas. For more information on the AUC’s reopenings check out their respective websites.
