"Scandal?" Shonda Rhimes (@shondarhimes) Leaves ABC (@abc) for Netflix (@netflix)!

“ABC its not us, it’s you.” That’s probably what showrunner Shonda Rhimes probably said when she announced she was taking Shondaland to Netflix to create more original content for the streaming network!

Yep, you read right ABC and Shonda Rhimes have parted ways! This definitely comes as a shock, especially since Grey’s Anatomy is still the highest-rated show on the network.

Under the multiple-year deal, Rhimes and her Shondaland banner will create and produce new projects for the streaming giant. Rhimes’ longtime producing partner Betsy Beers will continue to head Shondaland in the move to Netflix. Under what is said to be a rich four-year pact, Rhimes is expected to score a percentage of the back-end on programming she creates for Netflix.

“Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said. “Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.”

The move further aligns Rhimes with Netflix, which has featured the Grey’s Anatomy library that has helped elevate the veteran ABC medical soap to become the network’s most-watched drama — a rare feat for a show in its 13th season. The series heads into season 14 in the fall as it sets its sights on being the longest-running medical drama on television alongside ER.

“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” Rhimes said. “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for — the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”

ABC will continue to remain home to Grey’s Anatomy and its upcoming spinoff as well as Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder as well as the forthcoming drama For the People. Rhimes had been with ABC Studios for 15 years.

“Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and Shondaland will be there every step of the way,” Rhimes said. “I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people — especially our studio gladiator Patrick Moran and our most powerful and brilliant champion Channing Dungey. Starting today, we are thrilled to begin creating new Shondaland stories with Netflix. Everyone at Shondaland is honored to expand both our audience and our creative identity with Ted and the entire team at Netflix.”

ABC Studios will remain the home to Shondaland disciples Pete Nowalk (How to Get Away With Murder), Krista Vernoff (Grey’s Anatomy), Stacy McKee (the Grey’s spinoff), Don Todd and Paul William Davies (For the People), Mark Fish (Scandal), Mark Wilding (Grey’s spinoff), Bill Harper (Grey’s Anatomy) and Allan Heinberg.

“We’re so proud of the work we’ve done with Shonda and Betsy throughout our long and productive relationship. From the worldwide success of Grey’s Anatomy to today, with five series, a pilot from Allan Heinberg and a number of projects in development, we will continue to shepherd that success together,” ABC Studios president Moran said. “The Shondaland imprint will always be an important part of ABC Studios and we wish them all the best in this new endeavor.”

Added ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, who previously headed drama at the network: “Shonda, Betsy and I started working together with the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy and those early days will forever remain one of the highlights of my professional life. We are happy to continue working with Shonda and her team at Shondaland on Grey’s, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and the upcoming For the People and Grey’s spinoff. I’m proud to have given a home to what have become some of the most celebrated and talked about shows on television. With the launch of a new season upon us, fans can rest assured that TGIT remains intact and will be as buzzed about as ever.”

Sources say Rhimes had been renegotiating her overall deal with ABC Studios for the past few months. That the prolific producer would exit the network’s studio sibling comes as a blow for broadcast and a hint of things to come in the arms race for talent. With more than 455 scripted originals, broadcast, cable and streaming platforms are turning to proven hit-makers like Rhimes for new material. Rhimes is the first African-American woman to notch the rare 100-episode milestone three times in her career (for Grey’s, Private Practice and Scandal).

For Rhimes, it gives the star showrunner a new forum to tell richer stories that push the envelope as she has yet to explore the cable or streaming world. Scandal further solidified Rhimes as one of TV’s most powerful showrunners and helped ABC bolster its Thursday lineup. With the strength of Scandal and emergence of How to Get Away With Murder, the network moved Grey’s Anatomy to its formerly troubled 8 p.m. hour as it created a “TGIT”-branded night consisting of three Rhimes-produced dramas. Creatively, Scandal helped usher in a new era of diversity on the small screen when Rhimes cast Kerry Washington as fixer Olivia Pope. Washington picked up her first Emmy nomination in 2013 and became the first African American to be nominated for best drama actress in the past 18 years and fifth overal

The Rhimes deal — the streamer’s first overall — comes as free-spending Netflix has been aggressive when it comes to luring top talent. Last week, the streamer picked up a talk show hosted by David Letterman and acquired comic book publisher Millarworld as it pushes to own more of its content. (Last week, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman moved from his home at AMC to Amazon under a rich overall deal as the streamer retail giant begins to do the same.)

The arrest warrants came in the case of 20 LGBT Ugandans who spent 50 days on remand in a Ugandan prison on charges of violating Covid-19 orders by living in a homeless shelter run by the Children of the Sun Foundation (COSF). After their release, they accused Ugandan officials of mistreating them during the March 29 raid on the COSF shelter and during their incarceration.

The warrants were issued against Haji Abdul Kiyimba, the LCIII chairperson of Kyengera Town Council,  and Philemon Woniala, the deputy officer in charge of Kitalya Mini-Maxi Prison, for repeatedly failing to appear in court to answer charges of torturing LGBT youths.

The warrants were approved 14th October during a court session presided over by the Chief Magistrate of the central District of Wakiso, which is just outside the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Kiyimba and Woniala had been summoned to attend court on 26th August and again on 14th October, according to a statement issued by Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum (HRAPF). They face charges of violating Sections 2 and 4 of the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture Act.

“The two accused persons, however, chose to ignore the Court Summons and never appeared personally in Court to answer to the charges, which conduct amounts to contempt of Court,” stated Patricia Kimera, HRAPF’s Programmes Director for Access to Justice.

We are praying that justice is served for these heinous acts and are asking the global community to do their parts to ensure their conviction. #AllBlackLivesMatter EVERYWHERE!

COVID-19 has largely derailed social events in Atlanta, and the world at large. However, as learn to live with the virus, here and there events are making a comeback.

The first autumn event falls to Kiid Fro’s “Vanguard Fashion Show,” and it was an event definitely worth talking about!

Grade: B-

The event took place Saturday night, October 17th, in a surprisingly stylish venue in Downtown Atlanta. There were a couple of socialites and notable members of the city’s Black LGBT community gathered to watch some of the latest fashion lines of the season. The show begin with a late start but was overlooked largely thanks to the venue’s tasty drinks–sangrias we believe–and great conversations with fellow Kontrol Magazine’s Lifestyle Editor, Byron Jamal, media personality, Imani Vanzap; a rising star and “auntie” of Atlanta’s Black LGBT community, “About Him’s” Brandon Karson Jordan, Outpour Media Productions LGBTQ owner, Antar Bush, and Carl Levonzell aka K $tarr, an actor, indie rapper, and hilarious radio personality.

When the show finally began, and in between intermissions, we were able to see some amazing pieces of fashion. Never before, have I been to show where I liked all of the lines, or even more so saw pieces that I can actually see everyday people wearing. All of the lines pulled off high fashion with their own touch of haughtiness with the functionality of “The Everyman” in mind. Nevertheless, the lines must be chastised for their lack of plus-sized male models. The diversity was blaringly lacking in that department. More brands are now embracing bigger men–Savage x Fenty, Target–and even New York Fashion Week had one plus sized male model. This is something we hope will be corrected in the future.

However, we must admit we loved Jae Amour’s “The Penthouse Collection” and Soomar’s lines the most. We are familiar with both their work and have seen nothing but growth in the right direction from these designers.

However, the event was marred, as aforementioned by tardiness, long intermissions between the presentation of the fashion lines, and sound issues which seemingly crippled what could have been a great opening performance–the Voice of Array has “The Range.”

We did like Kiid Fro’s handling of the media, he was respectful, hands on, and ensured any information needed was freely given or arranged–Atlanta take notes! Also he mirrored Issa Rae’s philosophy of “reaching across the table” to friends, family, and associates to get his event off the ground using them as performers, models, media, and staff.

Zoe Effect Black Z-Pack Bag

As a finishing touch noted guests were given Z-Packs as gift bags! These cute little bags definitely follow the trend in high mens fashion of now having little bags to compliment trendy outfits.

For this to be Kiid Fro’s first event earns him some major cool points. His general love and the admiration and respect he garners from his community is somewhat heartwarming and enviable. We will be watching. Kudos.

[Reese] Witherspoon will return as the starring role [of “Elle Woods”] and will produce the film through her Hello Sunshine production company, alongside returning producer Marc Platt. While no director nor other returning cast members have been announced (although Luke Wilson has told us he’s ready for the call), we know that TV comedy writers extraordinaire Dan Goor and Mindy Kaling will be writing the script together.

We are ecstatic about the news of a new sequel for the Legally Blonde franchise! We hope all the cast members will return, especially Jennifer Coolidge. A few ladies from the cast reunited virtually to raise money for a noteworthy cause.

…the cast of the hit romantic comedy “Legally Blonde” reunited virtually on Tuesday,19 years after the film came out in July 2001, to raise money for World Central Kitchen.

During the event, the panel, which included WitherspoonJennifer CoolidgeSelma Blair and other cast members, reminisced about shooting the movie — and shared some behind-the-scenes secrets about an iconic scene.

We do, however, hate we have to wait until May 2022 to reunite with Elle ourselves. However, we understand COVID-19 may have played a role in its delay in release. We will keep you posted as more on Legally Blonde 3 becomes available. Now to find something PINK!
