Top 5! Hot Topics That Brought The Heat In July

July has been quite an eventful month in entertainment.

I’m talking about social media wise. Our timelines have been busier more than ever these last couple of weeks, with breaking headlines and coverage over some of the most shocking and just plain idiotic topics to scroll by on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. It almost seems as though once the warm weather comes out so does the shade, drama, and scandals. Check out the top 5 hot topics this past month had to offer our social media.

R Kelly’s “Alleged” Sex Dungeon
So “allegedly” R. Kelly turned underage women into sex slaves … so claims the family of one of the young women who is living with the R&B singer. Kelly has since denied the rumors but as you can see social media won’t let it die.

Usher Letting It Burn
This case really threw us all for a loop, Grammy Award-winning singer Usher reportedly had to pay a $1.1 million lawsuit settlement after claims that the performer gave a close family friend herpes.
The woman, who was reportedly a celebrity stylist, and get this, best friends and bridesmaid to Usher’s then wife Tameka Foster accused the performer of “consciously and purposefully” not notifying her of his infection while having unprotected sex. I guess you can say the singer is bringing a whole new meaning to “Let it burn”. Seriously though, wrap it up, it only takes 2 seconds promise.

Donnie and His White House Shenanigans
You guessed it! Donnie has hit us with “another 1” (in my DJ Khalid voice). If it’s not one thing it’s another, after the whole denial of Trump Care going down earlier in the month, to him bashing Sessions via his infamous Twitter account to even STILL finding a way to poke at both former President Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton. Trump has had quite the eventful month. At this point, can you really be surprised with what Donnie is doing? I mean really? He hasn’t even been in office for a year, and he’s caused more hell than ever. At this point just buckle up, and ride with caution, because this is going to be a long, very long 4 years. Oh, and he just banned trans people from the military too. (smh)

Keeping Up With Rob & Chyna
Joanne the Scammer would be proud, Rob and Chyna definitely made headlines for yet another dragged out social media fight. Rob and Chyna went at it once again via Instagram, when Rob accused Chyna of cheating, in which led to a frenzy of leaked photos, videos, and a hell of a lot of shade. However, Chyna has the last laugh because not only was she granted a restraining order out of it, but also a viable lawsuit. Can’t wait to see it all on the new season of KUWTK!

Introducing Sir and Rumi Carter
I had to keep it cute for the last top moment that July has had to offer. Queen B finally gave us a glimpse of her and Jay-Z’s latest additions to the family. Born on June 13th Sir and Rumi Carter both asleep in mothers arms, made their official debut to the world via Beyonce’s Instagram. The image captioned, “Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today” while using several emojis to accent the joyful mood.

Congratulations are in order for viral Black Lives Matter activist and the author of the critically acclaimed novel, “I’m Not Dying With You Tonight,” Kimberly Latrice Jones! It is being reported she has struck an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television!

via Deadline

Jones is the co-author of I’m Not Dying With You Tonight, alongside attorney Gilly Segal, a YA novel that focuses on prejudice and the racial tension in America. The film rights to the book were optioned earlier this summer by producer Autumn Bailey-Ford of Prominent Productions.

She has subsequently signed an exclusive multi-year deal with the studio to develop and produce original programming. This will include shows for broadcast, cable and streaming in scripted drama, comedy, unscripted and digital series.

The latter is particularly relevant given that Jones went viral over the summer following the killing of George Floyd, when she posted a nearly seven minute video – How Can We Win – that spoke to the anguish, fear, and outrage felt by Black people in America, and used a Monopoly analogy to address the history of systemic racism and economic inequity that persists in this country. The video, which has over 2M views on YouTube, was featured on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

She also has a publishing deal with Henry Holt and Co. to write two new books. The first, to be published in 2021, is How We Can Win: Race, History and Changing the Money Game That’s Rigged, which will continue the conversation from that video.

A former bookseller, Jones now hosts the Atlanta chapter of the popular Well-Read Black Girl book club and has also worked in film and television with the likes of Tyler Perry, Whitney Houston, and 8Ball & MJG.

Kimberly Latrice Jones said, “Storytelling is an essential component in my journey. It’s a rich educational tool and I’m thrilled to have such an exciting new platform.”

We are sure she is going to create amazing programming for the culture, her community, and just great work in general. It is only up from here queen! Keep shining!

In shocking news, The CW has opted to cancel its seemingly hit series, “Black Lightning” after its upcoming fourth season; despite green lighting a spin-off series, “Painkiller!”

The series’ cancellation was announced by its showrunner, Salim Akil:

“When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” series developer and executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement. “The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

“Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers, and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible,” he continued. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of superheroes to life for the culture. I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey. While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

We have to tell you we are NOT here for this cancellation. Black Lightning was one of the first Black led series on The CW in years since it was formed from the merger of The WB and UPN networks. Black Lightning and Painkiller can easily coexist on the network. Also, with Batwoman not starring Javicia Leslie and the All American being a hit series; we wonder if this is an attempt to keep The CW from being perceived as being “too Black?”

This marks the second series to be canceled on The CW after its upcoming 2021 season, the other being Supergirl. We sure are going to miss The Pierces…

A multi-unit housing complex in Woodhaven opened its doors Friday with historic relevance.

It’s the first residential building purchased by the trans community specifically for the trans community.

Ceyenne Doroshow, a community advocate and the founder of the non profit organization Gays and Lesbians Living in a Transgender Society (GLITS), purchased the property.

It’s all part of the organization’s mission to invest in real estate that provides sustainable housing to transgender individuals that have historically faced housing discrimination.

“When I am dead and gone, I want you to know that it was a Black trans woman that bought this building for you, for community,” she told a crowd of supporters who attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. “This was created from love and out of love and it will continue to be that.”

Twelve units in the three story walk up are now designated a safe space for those in need. The units come fully furnished and will be occupied by tenants who complete a thorough application process. The housing complex in Woodhaven opens in a year that has become a tragic one for the community.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 34 transgender or gender non-conforming people have been killed in violent attacks nationwide in 2020.

“Black trans lives matter and it just cannot be a slogan, we have to be there and support,” Donovan Richards, Queens Borough President-elect said at the event.

The opening of this trans housing complex is amazing a sign of our times. 2020 is the deadliest year on record for the murder of trans people, most being Black transgender women. This complex will serve as safe space and gathering spot for the trans community. Honestly, more housing complexes like this are needed globally.

Remember guys, #TransLivesMatter too, and always!
