With so much controversy surrounding this year’s Academy Awards, many wondered how the whole thing would play out. While many African-American actors and elite chose to sit this event out seeing as how there were no African-American nominees in any category, there were some who chose to show up and let their voice be heard. Actors like Kerry Washington of Scandal, The View host Whoopi Goldberg and even Kevin Hart and Dave Chappel showed up to the illustrious Hollywood event.
Comedian Chris Rock who hosted this year’s event wasted no time in addressing the controversy and lack of diversity at the Oscars with his opening monologue. Chris touched on the pressure he received to quit his hosting job, how to increase black nominees by creating “black categories,” and what type of racism exists in Hollywood.
Chris took a little jab at Jada Pinkett Smith, but everyone was fair game in the Oscar host’s monologue… even himself! Here are three funny lines (courtesy of oscar.go.com) Chris dished out in just the first two minutes on stage:
- “You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job!”
- “The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart.”
- “It’s the 88th Academy Awards which means this whole no black nominees thing has happened at least 71 other times.”
