The show kicked off with Black Lives Matter activists, Darnell Moore and Alicia Garza who spoke out about the movement with the powerful message that, “it’s about love not violence.”
Then the tributes began.
Remy Ma, Nelly Furtado, Eve, Lil Mo and Trina performed a medley of ‘Work It,’ ‘Get Ur Freak On,’ ‘Hot Boyz,’ ‘One Minute Man,’ ‘Lose Control’ and ‘WTF’ to honor Missy Elliott. Remy Ma and Fat Joe went on to perform their smash hit “All The Way Up.”
Eve was the hostess with the mostest. From her live performances and impeccable wardrobe changes, she took the stage by storm and reminded the world that honoring female rappers were long overdue.
“Women been Hip Hop, Women are Hip Hop and women will always be Hip Hop.”
Queen Latifah performed some of her hits, including ‘When You’re Good to Mama,’ ‘Come Into My House,’ ‘Had It Up 2 Here,’ ‘Monie In The Middle’ and ‘Ladies’ First,’ featuring Rah Digga, Lady of Rage, Da Brat and Yo Yo. Naughty By Nature also performed their hit single ‘Hip Hop Hooray’ in honor of Latifah.
Lil Mama, Teyana Taylor, French Montana and The Lox tribute Lil’ Kim with performances of her hits ‘Crush On You,’ ‘No Time’ and ‘All About The Benjamins.’ Hands down, Teyana Taylor gave the best performance tribute of the night. She embodied Queen Bee to a T, that you would think she really was Lil Kim.
Later, Diddy surprised Lil’ Kim with a tribute, honoring her career and their friendship. Plus, the crowd celebrates Kim’s birthday with a cake and song.
The tributes confined with Fantasia, Monica and Tweet performed a medley of ‘Free Yourself,’ ‘So Gone,’ ‘Let It Go’ and ‘Lady Marmalade’ in tribute to Missy, who wrote their hit records.
Runway models, including Jessica White and Winnie Harlow, paid tribute to some of Lil’ Kim’s most recognizable fashion statements.
Then Lil’ Kim took to the stage to perform her hits “Big Momma Thing,” “Queen B” and “It’s All About the Benjamins” with The Lox, Dej Loaf, and Rich Homie Quan. The performance was sub par and took a turn for the worst when Lil Kim and Rich Homie Quan both forgot the lyrics to the songs. Fans took to social media and scrutinize Quan heavy for not remembering the bars of iconic rapper, Biggie Smalls.
Queen Latifah, Yo Yo, Monie Love, Da Brat, Ms Jade, MC Lyte, Lady of Rage, Suga T, Rah Digga, Mia X, and Eve perform Queen Latifah’s hit “U.N.I.T.Y.” to close out Hip Hop Honors.
