Phylicia Rashad Lands Recurring Role on FOX’s Hit Show “Empire” (@EmpireFOX)

Everyone’s favorite TV mom is coming back to television and you can bet she’s going to bring class, flair and a little umph over to the Fox network. Emmy-award winning actress Phylicia Rashad has joined the cast of “Empire” and will be playing the role of the mother to Taye Diggs’ character.

Phylicia Rashad2

Phylicia Rashad is set to play Diana Dubois, a powerhouse from one of New York’s oldest and most prominent African-American families. As the mother of ambitious city councilman Angelo Dubois (played by season-three guest star Taye Diggs), she has her sights set on a higher office for her only son and she’ll stop at nothing to help him get to the top. Diana’s interactions with Cookie (played by Taraji P. Henson), Lucious (played by Terrence Howard) and the rest of the Lyon clan will lay bare the stark class divides that can exist, even within the black community.

This new role sounds like Phylicia will be a bit ruthless with some of her tactics. Politics is already a messy business but when you couple that with the shady side of the music business and Lucious Lyon, things definitely get turned up a notch. I can’t wait to see how it all goes down on this upcoming season of Empire.

Phylicia Rashad and Taye Diggs aren’t the only new faces joining the cast of “Empire” this season either. So far it has been confirmed that rapper-turned-actor Xzibit will become a recurring character this season playing the role of Shine Johnson, another crooked record exec and one of Lucious’ cohorts, Mariah Carey will be joining as Kitty – a fictionalized and exaggerated version of herself, Sierra McClain will star as one of Shine Johnson’s (Xzibit) artists, and French Montana is also slated to join the cast.

Empire is set to return for season three on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
