Transgender American actress Alexis Arquette, best known for her roles in Pulp Fiction and The Wedding Singer, died on Sunday morning at 12:32 a.m. Richmond Arquette, brother of Alexis, says that she passed while listening to the late great David Bowie.
Alexis came from a family of actors, including sister and brother Patricia and David Arquette, who have both spoken out in regards to the passing of their sibling.
Patricia penned a letter via Facebook on behalf of the whole family that began,
“Alexis was a brilliant artist and painter, a singer, an entertainer and an actor. She starred in movies like Last Exit to Brooklyn, Pulp Fiction, Jumpin’ at the Boneyard, Of Mice and Men, The Wedding Singer, and The Bride of Chucky. Her career was cut short, not by her passing, but by her decision to live her truth and her life as a transgender woman. Despite the fact that there are few parts for trans actors, she refused to play roles that were demeaning or stereotypical. She was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people.”
Patricia also spoke on Alexis’ transition, and what it taught her family,
“Alexis was born as Robert, our brother. We loved him the moment he arrived. But he came in as more than a sibling — he came as our great teacher. As Alexis transitioned into being a woman, she taught us tolerance and acceptance. As she moved through her process, she became our sister, teaching us what real love is.”
“She passed away surrounded by love. We held her and sang her David Bowie’s “Starman” as she punched through the veil to the other side. We washed her body in rose petals and surrounded her with flowers.”
David Arquette made a post of Alexis on Instagram, and the caption read, “
“Never have I had the honor of knowing and loving a funnier more beautiful soul then my brother/sister Alexis. Thank you all for your kind words of love and support. I know Alexis loves all the wonderful reactions to his passing and will be in our hearts for eternity. In the end he chose to be called my brother again but I will remember him as a Butterfly of a spirit always. I love you and in his words ‘Gracias!'”
TMZ reports that Alexis had been battling illness, which may have been the cause of her death.
