Kontrol Exclusive (@kontrolmag): Showtime! Patrice Lovely (@ActressPatrice), Star of Tyler Perry’s “Love Thy Neighbor” Makes Her Big Screen Debut!

Patrice Lovely, best known for her portrayal of Mother Hattie (Hattie Mae Love) on OWN’s Love Thy Neighbor, is far from the tour bus she use to travel on with holes in the floor. She is the star of one of Tyler Perry’s most successful shows and she is about to make her big screen debut alongside Perry in Boo! A Madea Halloween.

“This is a funny film. This is my first movie and it is awesome to be a part of this film,” said Lovely. The film opens nationwide this weekend, but it has been a long road to stardom. “All people know is the glitz and the glam, but I had to pay my dues to get to where I am now. A lot of times you see people that blow up overnight, but I am just not one of those people. I had to work, I worked very hard to get to where I am,” said Lovely.

She started her career back in 1996 travelling from city to city doing plays and working in the circus, but it wasn’t until 2011 that she received her big break. Perry flew to Detroit to see her in a stage play and the rest is history. “Once he got to Detroit, he fell in love with the character and that was it. I was in his office on that Monday. I have been working with Tyler ever since. Her signature character, Mother Hattie, is so infectious and paired well with Tyler’s most recognizable character, Madea, on stage that Perry decided to give Patrice her own show. “He said that (she would have a TV show) the first night he met me. He kept his word,” said Lovely.

Patrice portrayal of Hattie Mae Love is based off women in her family. Her portrayal of the character is so real she often has an out of body experience. “(Hattie Mae is a depiction) All of those people I grew up around, my mother, my aunt, cousin. All of those people is where Hattie comes from; just watching them and picking up their mannerisms. It is almost like these people take over my soul when I go on stage and I am in a zone,” Patrice said. The show is widely popular and is set to return for its 5th season. “We will return for another season. Tyler enjoys it; this is one of his babies. Out of all the shows that he writes for; this one he can just breathe,” Lovely said. Aside from the new season of Love Thy Neighbor, Patrice is working on new music. She has released 2 Gospel albums and has plans to return to the studio in the next few weeks to record a new album. “I am actually working on that now (new music). I am going back in the studio in the next few weeks to record a new album. I am looking forward to that,” Lovely said.

Patrice is also working on more film projects. She even exclusively told Kontrol that she and cast mate and friend, Cassi Davis, have plans to work together. She also wants to showcase more of her range as an actress. In the future, she hopes to play herself on screen and act out more challenging roles. “I definitely would love to play something outside of Hattie that would be challenging definitely. Of course you would like to expand your horizon; to grow. I would love to play another character or myself,” said Patrice. Lovely is living out her dreams and she attributes it all to God’s timing. “The Bible says your gift will make room for you. I’m just so overwhelmed. I would have never guessed in a million years that Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey would be my boss,” Patrice said. Keep an out for Lovely she has such more to share with her growing fan base.
