Hilary Duff apologized to fans after receiving backlash on social media for her couple’s costume.
It’s Halloween season so it’s about that time for many celebrities to dress up in their thoughtless costumes and apologize after the fact. First up on the list this year is “Younger” star, Hilary Duff and her trainer turned new boyfriend, Jason Walsh.
The two caused quite an uproar when they arrived at the Casamigos Halloween Party in Beverly Hills dressed as a pilgrim and a Native American.
After coming under heavy scrutiny for their Halloween costumes, Duff and Walsh are now doing a little damage control. Once the picture had gone viral, fans took to social media to ridicule the former Lizzie McGuire star.
“HILARY DUFF YOUR COSTUME IS SO YESTERDAY,” said a fan on Twitter. Another added, “No @HilaryDuff Traditional dress is not a costume and you being dressed as a pilgrim proves to me how insensitive and ignorant you are.”
Jason Walsh was not exempt from the scolding.
“Look at how much work dude put into being racist,” one fan wrote in reference to Walsh’s detailed costume, feathered headdress and red face paint.
Both have since apologized individually for their insensitivity. Hilary Duff tweeted an apology to her fans.
“I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume,” tweeted Duff. “It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my [heart] sorry.”
Walsh, as well, issued a public apology via his Instagram page.
“I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America,” Walsh wrote on Instagram. “In hindsight I would not have made that decision. I apologize to anyone I may have offended.”
Such a shame this innocent yet culturally insensitive mistake on the couple’s part overshadowed the fact that this Halloween party was indeed their first public appearance as an official couple.
Sparks first flew earlier this year as the pair bonded over their quality time in the gym and fine dining which resulted in turning their long time friendship into a budding romance.
Hilary married retired 35-year-old professional ice hockey player Mike Comrie in 2010, however, they split in January 2014. Despite initial rumours that the couple were trying to rekindle the romance, Hilary signaled the end of their romance in February 2015 when she officially filed for divorce. The two share a four-year-old son together named Luca.
