This week’s music highlight is Washington, D.C. native and Dreamville/Interscope signee, Ari Lennox, who recently released her highly anticipated EP, PHO. Let’s just say we’re in love with her sound and her visual for her single Backseat! You can catch the video below. Being the only female vocalist, Lennox might feel she has a lot to prove but after listening to her EP, you’ll soon notice, she has plenty to offer.
“Sometimes women are put in this box where we’re only supposed to talk about certain things,” the 25-year-old singer-songwriter explains. “I want to be braver and riskier. I think people want to hear that kind of honesty and frankness.”
Lennox draws inspiration from some of the greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton and Whitney Houston. Like those she admire, Lennox describes her own voice as “vulnerable and soulful; imperfect but pretty” and we couldn’t agree with her more.
The up and coming artist really shows her vocal skills on the lead single “Backseat” featuring label mate, Cozz. Between her sultry pitches with his explicit lyrics, it paints a picture for all those yearning for a sound strictly for the grown and sexy. She is contemplating something that is nontraditional for most women, taking the initiative to get exactly what she wants, and we at Hey Mikey ATL are not mad at that. Did we forget to mention that we love her look specifically her natural locs!
“While the music is soulful,” asserts Lennox, “I’m also talking about something suggestive and unusual for a female.”
Produced mostly by DJ Grumble, who delivered “Backseat,” with additional production from Fellt and Hollywood JB, Ari Lennox says the project sounds like, “Modern, relaxed, turned up soul… It’s just chill with trappy vibes reminiscent of the beautiful music from the ‘70s.”
PHO is now available at all digital retailers.
