The country is in state of disarray and depression following the election of Donald Trump on Tuesday. This is easily the biggest political upset in American History. Everyone is looking for someone to blame for this debacle, but for many it boils down to ignorance and non-voters.

Surprisingly, one of the latter was Colin Kaepernick, someone who has become a symbol of justice and civil disobedience, in recent months.

Naturally, the NFL player has faced a lot of backlash for his decision not to vote in a presidential race that Trump won by a very narrow margin and/or the electoral college (different sources cite one or both).

Colin Kaepernick admits he “really didn’t pay too close of attention” to the outcome of the election on Tuesday night.

While speaking with reporters on a conference call from Arizona, Colin explained why he didn’t feel the need to vote in response to the backlash he’s been receiving.

“I’ve been very disconnected from the systematic oppression as a whole,” he said. “So for me, it’s another face that’s going to be the face of that system of oppression. And to me, it didn’t really matter who went in there. The system remains intact that oppresses people of color.”

Colin responded yesterday with a post on his Instagram with a snippet of an interview Malcolm X gave about his own decision not to vote in the sixties during the height of The Civil Rights Movement. Check it out below:

Founding Father, Thomas Paine said it best, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” The entire nation is divided by fear, hate, and uncertainty during a time we need to be banding together. All we can do is hope and pray for the best. Still, we do not support Colin not voting. LEGIONS of people have died so that he can have the right to cast a ballot. God help us all.
