Chicago actor and rapper, Dante Brown, is destined for stardom as his theatrical talents shine through in the new FOX’s hit series, Lethal Weapon.
At just the young age of 17, Dante Brown has already accomplished so much from his role in Law & Order: SVU to Showtime’s Shameless and countless other appearances. Now he is starring alongside Hollywood heavy weights, Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford as Roger Murtaugh Jr., Wayans’s rebellious teenage son. Seeing how Brown is currently the same age as his character on the show, it was easy for him to connect to the role organically.
“My character is super intelligent and he’s a very obedient kid that’s stepping out of his shell,” said Brown. “I have a smart sense about myself and I obey everything my parents tell me to do. We connect in having similar parents.”
Having seasoned costars like Damon Wayans gives Brown the opportunity to learn and gain tools to succeed in the entertainment industry but with comedians on set, Brown finds himself laughing the most.
“I enjoy the fun that we have on set and the connection we all have together,” said Brown. “It’s amazing because [Wayans] he’s so open towards me and we’re always cracking jokes and making each other laugh. It’s great being around him.”
Brown began his acting career at two years old doing print work. He apparently always had the Hollywood look, easily landing his first gig in a Keebler print ad and soon after, a commercial.
“Everybody would always look at me and say ‘haven’t I seen that baby in a commercial or this show’,” said Brown.
When he’s not on set, Brown is recording music in the studio under the name DanteThePoet. Like the great Chicago rappers before him, Brown is all about inspiring his generation with his music that’s on trend but clean for everyone to enjoy. Being born and raised in Chicago, it comes as no surprise that Dante Brown’s biggest inspiration is none other than the creative genius from the Southside, Kanye West.
“I look at him and say how did he do it and how can I take that an implement it and make it new for my generation. How can I make it the best music for my people?”
Brown’s love for music coexist with his passion for acting, with one never overriding the other. He doesn’t limit himself in choosing one for long term success but rather he looks at actors like Donald Glover, who also raps under the name of Childish Gambino, as sees that he can have the best of both worlds.
“If Childish Gambino can do then I can do it too,” said Brown. “I see no problem doing both and making myself happy and creating for the world, and kids my age who need music like mine, clean music that can still get them partying and be upbeat. I can’t pick one over the other.”
Brown hopes to one day collaborate with Childish Gambino as well as Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Rihanna, and Chicago’s very own Chance the Rapper and Kanye West. He has dreams for his future to be filled with tour dates, movie gigs, and overall perfecting his craft. For now, he has his eyes set on creating a safe space for up and coming artists to showcase their talents for a good cause in his own charity event called DanteThePoet and Friends.
“It’s a concert where I get to have kids perform and I headline the show. There’s not a lot of places where kids can perform and have a place to party and let loose,” said Brown. “I would love to give some of the proceeds to Black Lives Matter or a cancer foundation because those causes touch my heart.”
Dante Brown understands the importance of giving back to his peers and being a great example for those looking to follow a similar career path. He encourages young actors and musicians to keep the faith and persevere even in the face of adversity because with a steadfast spirit and determination, anything is possible.
“Listen and stay strong. A lot of No’s can hurt you but you got to stay strong and wait for that yes because it’s coming,” Brown declared. “For music, stay by what you create. A lot of people are going to want to change it or embellish it but if you think your vision is better as is, fight for that. It’s a part of you and a part of your art.”
Though he’s accomplished plenty thus far, things are just beginning for Dante Brown. He, along with his brother, Dusan Brown, are starring in their own short film called Black Doves. Also, Brown is releasing new music next month and plan on dropping an EP for fans very soon.
