Anything with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in it is automatically Oscar worthy!

These two veteran actors are walking gold and it truly shows in their latest film, Fences! Based on August Wilson’s play of the same name, the film centers around a sanitation worker in the fifties,Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington), who once dreamed of playing professional baseball, but life had other plans for him. Troy finds himself disillusioned with fife, but is supported by his earthy and doting wife, Rose (Viola Davis).

Denzel Washington plays Troy Maxson and Viola Davis plays Rose Maxson in Fences from Paramount Pictures.

Throughout the film Troy struggles with racism and his own inner demons as he is haunted by his past and trying to find more out of life in the present. His sons, Lyons (Russell Hornsby) and Cory (Jovan Adepo), serve as reminders of his lost youth, former dreams, and the issues he has had with his own father. Although his family loves, and times fear him, you truly learn this is a film about a man and his family mending “fences” and accepting their right and wrong in what has transpired between them and their lives.

Interestingly, this film is very reminiscent of the play it comes from. Almost word for word, the characters of the film mirror the play. Unlike the confinement of the stage in theater, characters are free to move in films; but here the drama is kept to a handful of places. The world of Fences is small and truly centering on the Maxson family. You get the feeling their drama is as big as the world; and rightfully so, perhaps as Troy’s personality and issues are as big as the screen allows.

You will LOVE this movie, the characters, and its messages of acceptance and forgiveness. Perhaps you will find yourself mending the fences in your life. You can catch Fences in theaters nationwide today!
