The DC Cinematic Universe is expanding and quickly–at least with the Batman Family!

Warner Bros. Studios has announced that the superhero, Nightwing, will be getting a standalone film!

As you may not know Nightwing is the code name usually associated with Richard “Dick” Grayson, Batman’s first sidekick and the first Robin (There have been four to date). Dick’s early childhood was spent in the circus where he was an acrobat alongside his parents. However, like Batman, his world was torn apart when his parents were murdered. Seeing him as a kindred spirit, he was taken in by the Dark Knight and soon demanded to be trained and fight by his side at the age of nine. Since then has has grown to become the most agile human on the planet, a prolific leader of multiple teams, and even served as Batman during times Bruce Wayne was either dead, injured, or missing in action.

Recently, McKay continued promotions for his latest Batman venture on the Shanlian Batman podcast, and it was there that the director compared Nightwing to Bruce Wayne’s Batman.

According to the director, Wayne is bogged down by the privileges of his life, and they make him more “dour and angry.” As for Grayson, the character avoids that sort of chic behavior because of his upbringing as a circus performer.

“They’re people who live hand-to-mouth and that’s something that informs him and his attitude,” McKay explained. The director also noted that “all the same things happen” to Grayson which Wayne went through since both men had their families die rather tragically.

When it comes down to it, McKay sees Grayson as a person with the same pitfalls as Wayne, but the younger hero carries his vigilante duties with a very different outlook on the world.

“He’s a fascinating guy to me because he had all the same things happen to him. He’s got some of the same negatives as Bruce Wayne and then from a society standpoint – obviously he was adopted into Bruce Wayne’s life – but he didn’t start that way. He’s this guy who has all these negatives and then even more negatives and yet he remains. Those are things why I like Dick Grayson, why I like the idea of Nightwing as a movie,” McKay explained.

We cannot wait for more info on the upcoming Nightwing film? We do know Deathstroke The Terminator, a frequent foe of Nightwing’s will appear in the next solo Batman movie. Perhaps Nightwing will appear in it too. It would make a great segue into the character’s own solo film! We will keep you posted on more information as it becomes available!
