Lionsgate knew it had a hit on its hands when it greenlit the reboot for Saban’s Power Rangers movie.
This film plays off our nostalgia for the simpler, cooler time of 1992 when “five teenagers with attitude” were granted amazing powers and even more amazing costumes and vehicles (Zords) to save the world from the evil sorceress, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). Flash forward twenty-five years to the rebooted film and Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Zack (Ludy Lin), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky G), and Kimberly (Naomi Scott) are still teenagers, but rebels and outcasts as well. We officially have “The Breakfast Club meets super-heroism” in the latest addition of Power Rangers!
Much of the series is the same. The Power Rangers are still defending Angel Grove, they still have their dino-themed zords (The Tyrannosaurus, Mastodon, Triceratops, Sabertooth Tiger, and Pteradactyl), Zordon, and Alpha 5. However, Rita, Goldar, and the Putty Patrol are bigger, badder, and deadlier than ever. This time around the The Power Rangers are a freshly chosen team of recruits brought together by mischief and happenstance rather than true friendship. Just as they learn of their amazing new powers, Rita Repulsa, a former Ranger a resident villainess, has been reanimated a hungry for the power of The Zeo Crystal; a rock that apparently ceded Earth with the ability to create life. It is up to the Rangers to overcome their own insecurities and teenage angst to stop Rita from retrieving the crystal and destroying all life on Earth.
“POWER RANGERS FOREVER!” That is what we are screaming from the top of our lungs! This darker, grittier, remake of the series we grew up loving is nothing short of awesome. The realistic portrayal of the Rangers as insecure teens is more believable and Elisabeth’s performance as Rita stole the show. We love even more the foreshadowing of the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver, and future Power Rangers villains. The producers of the film have announced a six movie arc for our titular heroes. Be sure you stay for the post-credits scene and more importantly that you catch this awesome movie in theaters everywhere today! “Go, go Power Rangers!”
