We have all heard the old saying “time is money”, and we have usually heard it from our parents, grandparents, teachers, etc. Basically, anyone from the baby boomer generation. The older generations tend to believe that a person can only focus on one thing at a time. Well, times have changed and we now live in a society where being a good multitasker is valuable. The concept of time management is evolving as more and more millennials flood the workforce. This article will give you three tips that will help you manage your time and become an expert at multitasking like a millennial.
Make Your Weekly/Monthly Goals Bite Size
The first step of learning how to be a great multitasker is learning how to break down your goals. Once you set your weekly or monthly goals of what you want to accomplish, start looking for ways that you can break those goals into smaller tasks. For example, if one of your goals is to write a chapter of a book every week. You can break that goal into a smaller task by agreeing to write for twenty minutes each day that week. By the end of the week your chapter is either completed or almost there.
Give It Your All In Short Burst Of Time
Step two of learning how to manage your time wisely is learning how to master the Pomodoro Technique. Okay, I have a confession to make. This technique was not created by a millennial, but millennials who juggle multiple projects at once love it! The Pomodoro Technique was created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 80’s, and the only thing you need is a timer. Most smartphones or watches come with some sort of timer app or you could use a plain old kitchen timer. This technique is designed to help you power through any distractions while helping you make the most use of your time. All you have to do is decide on what you want to work on. Then set your timer for 30 minutes. Next focus all your energy on your task for 30 minutes straight with no distractions. After your 30 minutes is up, you can take a 3 to 5 minute break then start the process all over again. You will be surprised at how much you can accomplish in 30 minutes of distraction free time
Make The Most Of Your Apps
The last step of learning how to manage your time wisely is making the most of your smartphone apps. There are tons of apps available through your smartphone that will help you manage your time wisely. You can use your calendar to keep up with deadlines and help keep track of projects you have completed. You can also find apps that let you create “To-Do” list that will sync across all your devices. Some good apps to check out are Remember The Milk, Wunderlist, and My Life Organized (MLO).
Trying these tips should turn you into a multitasking genius in no time.
