If anyone thought Bruce Jenner’s transition into Caitlyn Jenner was just a phase then you were sadly mistaken. There is officially no going back for Caitlyn as she confirms she has undergone gender reassignment surgery. For those of you who may not understand this term it is also called sex reassignment surgery (SRS) and is defined as a treatment for gender dysphoria which changes the physical appearance and function of a person’s genitals to bring them into alignment with their gender identity. Also called gender confirmation surgery (via YourDictionary.com).
Cait broke the news in a recent interview with 20/20’s Diane Sawyer ahead of the release of her memoir which briefly mentioned her surgery.
“I do mention in the book everything I did,” Jenner told Sawyer. “But I wasn’t less of a woman the day before I had the surgery than I was the day after I had the surgery, because that did not define who I am as a human being.”
Jenner said that while she chose to write about her own decision in the book, she emphasized that it is personal and private.
“That doesn’t mean in the future that I have to talk about it, that I’m going to dwell. The media may but I’m not going to dwell on that subject,” she said. “And I would make a suggestion to all people out there — don’t ask the question. It’s not an appropriate question to ask any transperson.”
SRS is a major step, perhaps the biggest one in any transgender persons transitioning process. It is hard to believe it has only been a little over a year since we said goodbye to Bruce. Caitlyn has definitely had her fair share of drama not related to her transitioning–feuding with her ex-wife Kris Jenner, being pro-Trump, being blasted by the trans community for her conservative stances, and then there is the whole debacle around her now cancelled show, I Am Cait.
Nevertheless, we wish Cait the best! Check out a few clips from the interview below!
