[PHOTOS/EVENT RECAP] Signal 23 TV’s “About Him Season 2: The Revolution” Premiere Party!

gary lavard

It has been a wild ride as we counted down twenty-three long days to the season premiere of Signal 23 TV’s About Him Season 2: The Revolution!

Well now the show is out and Sunday night we were in the mix of one amazingly poppin’ premiere party! It all went down at Atlanta’s very own Suite Food Lounge.  Media sponsored by Rolling Out, The drinks were wonderful, the ambiance was positive and crazy cool, but the best part was meeting the amazing cast of this highly anticipated web series! Yep, our boy Gary Lavard is back as the face of About Him in a new role, with a set of new and familiar faces to tackle homophobia, isolation, and true love against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic of the eighties.

The Series

As you recall, the new season of the series on the network will not be a continuation of the first season. Gary Lavard is now “Dustin,” a gay college student hopelessly in love with campus hottie, “Armani” (Chris June). For Dustin it is love at first sight and he wants nothing more than to be with his dream boy, but is haunted by memories of homophobia and his own painful lessons in what it means to be Black and gay in this time period. Dustin is inquisitive and hopeful, but like so many gay men has filled his emptiness and pain with man after man. He prays Armani is the one. His prospects finally seem to be looking better when he finds himself in an African-American Studies class with Armani and the two reluctantly hit it off–with a little nudge from his best female friend (or friend-girl, as The Kidz like to say).

The budding couple’s pleasure is soon tainted by pain, however, when while trying to hook up they witness a hate crime so graphic and vile you will feel your heart wrenching. For Dustin love will always be “About Him,” but he may soon learn everything comes with a price and sometimes with a fight. Let The Revolution begin…

We have to say this is by far the best web series we have yet to see. It was worth the wait and anticipation. The story line’s timing is right on, especially in a renewed age of social activism. This series reminds us of darker times when being gay was deemed wrong on every level and systemic homophobia was rampant. Henderson Maddox has truly outdone himself with this piece of work. Be sure you subscribe to Signal 23 TV’s Vimeo  to catch the first two episodes now by clicking here! Happy viewing!

The Premiere Party

Our very own Michael “Hey Mikey” Fanning was on location to check out the premiere party and screening and the web stars were out in full effect. Gary Lavard, Valerie Payton, Sherrod Willis, Rion Deshon, Darius Lavale,  and Zahir Roberts along with newbies, Corey Thompson, Levi Erik, Danny Rowe, Jaquay Wilkerson, Thomas Mackey, and Toni Bernard were all there in full effect! Check out some of the pictures below!

They say money cannot buy happiness, apparently it cannot buy peace either.

Exes, Kris and her “ex-husband,” Caitlyn Jenner are clashing thanks to the latter’s memoir.

In the upcoming episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kris vents to her daughters, Khloe and Kim Kardashian about the latest nonsense between her and Cait.

“I read it and basically the only nice thing she had to say was that I was great socially at a party one time …. Everything she says is all made up. Why does everything have to be that Kris is such a bitch and an a–hole?”

In an excerpt of the forthcoming book released on Wednesday, Caitlyn, 67, claims of the longtime marriage, “I tell Kris about my gender issues before I make love to her. This will always be a subject of dispute between us. She insists that she was taken by surprise by my ultimate transition to Caitlyn, which obviously means in her mind that she did not know enough.”

Kris, who was married to a pre-transition Caitlyn (then known as Bruce) for more than two decades, adamantly denied that claim.

“I was curious and said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ She said, ‘You just would never understand,’” the reality matriarch recalled. “And then, all through the book, ‘Kris knew. Kris knew before I even made love to her.’ I’m like, ‘What?’”

Kris also stewed, “I’ve never been so angry and disappointed in somebody in my whole life.”

In her memoir, “The Secrets of My Life,” Caitlyn is also said to reveal that she went through sex reassignment surgery in January.

We have to say this is all a bit bizarre. Nevertheless, we had no idea Caitlyn had undergone sexual reassignment surgery. Bruce truly is gone now. Again, you can catch this latest Kardashian drama in full this Sunday. Check out a video of Kris complaining below.

How many times can we say that Tyson Anthony is a true genius? Definitely once more, because it has never been truer!

The writer and creator of About Him, who also brought us Pharm: The Series and Entercourse is back with a second season of his hit web series, Raising Eli!

tyson anthony's raising eli

When we last left off in the first season finale Eli (Chris June) seemed to overwhelmed with personal, romantic, and financial issues. Meanwhile, Travis (Monnie Isham) and Shad (Desmond Fletcher) grew closer, bonding over pizza, video games, and general laziness. Elsewhere, we learned King (Desjuan Zaire) suffers from social anxiety disorder. In the second season a few months have passed and things seem to only have gotten even harder for Eli. He was evicted from his house and has moved into a home his grandmother left for him–with Travis in tow. To make matters worse his insensitive and obnoxious cousin, Monte moves in too when his lack of finances threaten to have their home foreclosed on.

[VIDEO/EXTENDED TRAILER] Signal 23 TV Goes There w/ “Uncle Joey!”

Signal 23 TV continues to release some pretty riveting and groundbreaking series. Yep, the network that brought you Steel River, About Him, About Justin, Tex Brown and more is back with a new heart-wrenching series, Uncle Joey.

Starring the network’s newest web star, Thomas Mackey, the series tackles and makes social commentary on HIV, an issue that has long plagued the LGBTQ community. Although there have been great medical advances in the fight against the disease, the stigma attached to it is as venomous and damning as ever. Check out the extended trailer for the new series below:

Just watching this trailer brings out a whole array of emotions. The first being how powerful it is to see a character with HIV in such a prominent role. This is all very touchy subject material and its enaction will really tie into the success of the series and how the audience receives it. Second, we love seeing the relationship between Joey and his nephew.

We have seen Jordan Preston Carter as “Quincy Young” on Tyler Perry’s The Haves & The Have Nots, but never in a role like this. Seeing a young child question a grown man about his HIV status is brand new territory indeed! Finally, and truly, we have to give Henderson Maddox his props on casting Thomas Mackey. The man is walking piece of art! You may remember him from the web series, Triangle, but we are sure you will be giving his Uncle Joey  role top billing after viewing the series.

Binge Watch Worthy: Netflix’s (@netflix) “Iron Fist,” “The Get Down,” & “Chewing Gum!”

netflix logo

We love ourselves some Netflix! It is hard to believe it started off as a way to stream movies from anywhere. Now, however, it has become a full fledged network with its own original series.

Over the last month we have definitely been binge watching three of its original series; Marvel’s Iron Fist, The Get Downand Chewing Gum!

Each of these series were so riveting and good that we had to tell you why you should be sacrificing five to thirteen hour stints of time catching up on them!

Marvel’s Iron Fist

iron fist

Netflix has really found a niche with its Marvel series based on lesser known heroes from Marvel Comics wide repertoire. We loved Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, and now we are just as stoked for Iron Fist. This latest series entails the origins of martial arts master, Danny Rand, who can use his chi energy to harden his fist with glowing energy that make his fists virtually indestructible. With these fists he can shatter substances as hard as steel and stone. Played by actor, Finn Jones, the series shows Danny’s return to New York City after being declared dead years ago. He soon learns however, his family’s company is being ran by his former childhood friends, who have become corporate sharks. Additionally, the threat of a terrorist ninja clan, The Hand, grows when they began selling drugs under his company’s name. Danny must overcome his own demons and insecurities to master his role as the “Iron Fist” and save the city in the process.

Marvel definitely made an awesome attempt at adapting Iron Fist to Netflix. However, it does have a few kinks. The source material is dated and plays off white savior stereotypes. A happy compromise would have been to make him Asian. Many fans feel Lewis Tan would have been a better choice to lead the series. We have to agree. Finn Jones may be Game of Thrones cool, but he was off his mark here. Hopefully he can make it up in The Defenders which will debut later this year!
