Kontrol Exclusive: Fit Mom & Superwoman—Laura Govan (@LauraMGovan) Won’t Be Stopped!

laura govan

Whoever said a woman’s life as she knows it ends when she becomes a mother must have been born in the fifties. Gone are the days when being a mother is a woman’s “be all and end all.” Do not get us wrong; any good mother should be there for her kids, but modern moms know their own well-being is intricately tied in with their children’s.

Enter the world of Laura Govan, reality television star, businesswoman, and “Fit Mom.”

This astonishing woman is still taking the world by storm. “…so much [is going on], so much! I’ve been working on my fitness line, my clothing line, my accessory line is booming and doing amazing…I’ve gotten crazy support from a lot of people—Amber Rose, [Blac] Chyna, Neicey Nash, Karreueche [Tran], Christina—so a lot of women are wearing it and loving it…It’s so funny because I had no intention of starting a business or doing anything…I didn’t realize the passion that I had for it…it’s such a blessing…”

We all know and love Laura from her appearances on shows like VH-1’s Basketball Wives LA and TV One’s The Next 15, but honestly as you can tell there is much more to her than just reality television. Ms. Govan is now a “Fit Mom.” A fit mom is a term used to describe mothers who have not allowed childbirth and motherhood to keep them from being healthy and fit. When asked would she define herself as a fit mom she replies; “You know I most definitely feel like anyone who works out is definitely fit…it’s hard to wanna get up and do something. It takes a lot, just the will to want to be motivated, especially when you’re not in the right frame of mind…” Many people might argue that because Laura does not have a typical “nine to five” job she has the time to work out and develop her body. “Not necessarily. I beg to differ. Because my job is twenty four hours, not only do I have my children all day, every day; even when they’re at school I’m on call [she laughs]…I  make time to work out. Even if that means I have to get up at five AM to get ahead of my children to do that then that’s what I’ll do. Also, working out does not mean you have to go to the gym. I hate that people think that. It’s such a stereotypical thing, I feel like it’s an excuse. ‘People are like oh I can’t get to them.’ I’m like shit I can’t either! Do things in the house, you have to figure it out. There are so many things you can do…”

The world can be a truly uncertain place. There are times when you wish you had an easy answer for the toughest situations. That, however, is rarely the case. Life often proves itself to be a brutal teacher and taskmaster. So what do you do when you add being anything outside of the norm; like being gay for example. There’s no handbook or guide to tell you what to do or how to react when you’re a guy who likes guys. That is where author, actor, and all around great guy, Langston John Blaze comes in with The Underwear Drawer: An Intimate View On Gay Relationships! This amazing book seems to be the “be all” book for surviving the ups and downs of gay life. “I want to help people….when I first came out and began exploring my sexuality there was no one to advise me, tell me what to do, or how to react. I had to figure everything out on my own and it was hard…I got to thinking I really wish there was a book or guide to help gay people, especially young ones, navigate all this…”

The Underwear Drawer may be the best friend any gay person can have! Besides being very well written; it is very relatable. In fact, you will undoubtedly find yourself relating to all the scenarios of self-esteem, love, sex, dating, and ultimately acceptance. “No two gay men are exactly alike, there’s a lot of diversity in the gay community, but all of them can relate to this book…” Reading over the book, you definitely find yourself engrossed in the process and journey it takes you on. Sexuality is complex, and fluid, but the human soul is not. At our core, gay or straight, we all want to be loved.

Wesley Snipes’ (@wesleysnipes) Novel Debut Lands At HarperCollins Imprint For 2017

Can we get a round of applause for actor Wesley Snipes who can now add ‘author’ to his resume?

Wesley Snipes has penned his debut novel “Talon of God” which is a supernatural thriller that will be co-authored by Ray Norman.

“Talon of God”‘s lead characters are Lauren Jefferson, a young doctor who becomes embroiled in an apocalyptic battle between the forces of heaven and hell, and Talon Hunter, a spirit warrior.

In a sit down with Deadline, Wesley Snipes described the premise by saying:

“There are spiritual warriors that inhabit this planet who are here to help balance out the evil forces, and they are always looking for the next apprentice. And when they find the next apprentice to train — the next heir apparent — then they can move on to the higher realms.” The reluctant Lauren is chosen.

“The lead character Lauren is a very spiritual person,” Snipes said. “A spiritual woman, and her father is a minister who is put to the challenge. Lauren has been chosen to be a Holy Warrior here on Earth. She’s a doctor; her father is a Baptist minister.”

Snipes also revealed that he and Norman developed the book with the intention of an eventual screen adaptation. “Without a doubt,” Snipes said, adding he specifically wrote a strong female lead “to bridge the gap in terms of equality of action content for women.” Snipes said the book has “an urban element, a hip-hop element, supernatural elements.”

The actor said he’s been working on the book with Norman for two years, and that the two met after contemplating an earlier project together. Norman is a first-time novelist who has ghost-written books on health, nutrition and spiritual self-help.

Asked about the role of faith in the book, Snipes said, “There are spiritual questions. Are there demonic forces in the world that manipulate us into doing things that are not in our best interests or into accepting conditions that are not in our best interests? The human mind is pretty intriguing, why we do some of the things we do.”

Snipes compared the tone of the novel to films The Devil’s Advocate, Constantine“and little bits of Blade thrown in there.”

A Few Valuable Lessons You Can Take From Angie Martinez’s (@angiemartinez) ‘My Voice’

Angie Martinez, also known as ‘The Voice of New York’, gives us a behind the scenes of her life in her memoir ‘My Voice’. Her book includes her journey in making a name for herself in radio, eventually becoming one of the greatest in her industry, as well as bringing back memories of some of the biggest moments in Hip Hop! From her career, to Hip Hop, to relationships, to trials and tribulations, to her controversial interview with Tupac and more, there is SO much content to gain something from. You will truly build a new-found respect for Angie after reading ‘My Voice’.

I have shared just a few lessons you can take from ‘My Voice’. However, I still recommend reading it for yourself, because like these lessons, there are many more you can take from the read.

1. ‘A mistake or a setback doesn’t have to define you.’

This is a quote from Angie in ‘My Voice’, that was a lesson that she took from the late great Tupac Shakur. Amidst the ‘east coast vs west coast’ beef that rappers Tupac and Biggie had going on, Angie accepted an invitation from Tupac to fly to Los Angeles for an interview. Thats right, Tupac, the artist, requested Angie Martinez to come do an exclusive interview with him.

Now for all of the interview’s details, you’ll have to read the memoir. However, I will share with you one important Q & A from it. Angie says that she asked Tupac if he regretted a certain move in his career, and he responded to her that he wasn’t afraid of making mistakes.

“He told me that, yeah he was gonna f*** up, but that was not ever going to be enough to erase everything else, all the years of work,”

says Angie in My Voice. In other words, we will all make mistakes! What matters is learning from that mistake as oppose to letting it break you.
