Balmain takes L.A.

Olivier Rousteing with Kim Kardashian at the Balmain LA opening

Parisian house Balmain set it’s sights on the bright lights of Hollywood when creative director Olivier Rousteing decided to open a flagship store in Los Angeles.

Located on 8421 Melrose Place, the event brought out all the stars including Miguel, Migos, and Kim Kardashian along with a slew of models all decked out in the pricey designer duds. The opening came just as Balmain unveiled their new collaboration with Beats on a collection of headphones. The campaign for the partnership, which is being fronted by Kylie Jenner, was released this week and garnered much anticipation.

The collection of earbuds and headphones are done in the signature Balmain gold and light pink.  Before entering the venue, the partygoers were given their own beats headphones where they were able to listen to songs personally selected by Rousteing. As guests danced others took pictures in two different pavillions which were decked out in different themes.

The highlight of the night was possibly when the slew of models descended down a staircase all wearing looks from Balmain’s resort 2018 collection. After the models led the guests into the actual venue, Olivier made a heartfelt toast thanking everyone for their attendance and support. Afterwards, Migos hit the stage for an epic performance.

The celebration was as over the top as all of Balmain’s collections are. Who can forget the epic Balmain x H&M collection, which was presented with a larger than life fashion show that featured performers and voguers? This will, no doubt, be another successful knotch in the bedazzled belt for Olivier Rousteing, who has turned the house of Balmain into a household name. Only halfway through the year and Rousteing has already created a successful fragrance, designed costumes for an opera, opened an LA flagship, and collaborated with Beats all while still designing collections for the house. The young designer is on a roll and the anticipation is high for what he has in store next.

#Fashion Crush- Rihanna (@rihanna)

Rihanna at the Valerian premiere

It almost seems unfair to the other people in the entertainment industry to make Rihanna this week’s fashion crush.

After 10 years in the public eye, Rihanna has aquired an array of amazing red carpet and street fashion looks. So many, in fact, that designers are clammering to work with her on special collaborative collections. All in order to get that ‘Rihanna’ influence so fans will flock to their stores.

Her collaborations with such designers as Manolo Blahnik and Puma and even a jewelry collection with French jeweler Chopard have been commercially successful all thanks to the barbadian beauty. After all this time it seems that Rihanna has pretty much always been a style star. When looking back to 2005, when her career was in it’s infancy, Rihanna’s style was majorly influenced by her Caribbean roots. Most of her performances were done barefoot.

Cut to 2007 when Good Girl Gone Bad swept the nation. It seems that Rihanna’s style seemed to change from that ‘Good Girl’  mentality as well. We started to see her favor a more high fashion look. Rihanna’s street style was being imitated by every girl looking to spice up her wardrobe. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see Rihanna on many style boards. Every red carpet waits in anticipation for Rihanna’s arrival, which is probably why the singer often chooses to be the very last to show up.

The influence of Rihanna as fashion muse to the world’s top designers has been iconic to say the least. For a black woman to command such attention in the fashion world can only be described as historic. Rihanna has fronted campaigns for Balmain and has been a muse for the house of Dior for the past few years. With a burgeoning acting career and designer friends in her bag, Rihanna is trending to become the next Audrey Hepburn.

War For the Planet of the Apes  is the third installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot series. It follows the confrontation between the apes, led by Caesar, and the humans for control of Earth. The movie greatly depicts Caesar internal conflict for his desire to maintain peace and the instinct to defend his family from Colonel and the soldiers endless attacks. As the movie unfolds, the roles seem to reverse where the apes appear more human than the human themselves. Overall, the film is both classic and contemporary with the choice of weapons used in the film and takes the audience through an array of emotions that by the time it gets to the end, you’re guaranteed to have a swelling in your throat.

I really enjoyed the movie. I think this one is the best out of all three,” said an attendee. Skyy from Black Ink Crew had an emotional reaction to the film. “The movie is straight real but the ending, like my heart is hurting.

If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, get them now because War for the Planet of the Apes is a must see. The movie will be in theatres Friday, July 14th. In the meantime, check out the photos below from the event.

#Fashion Crush- Giovanna Battaglia (@Bat_Gio)

Giovanna Battaglia

Just one look at Giovanna Battaglia would make even the most fashion forward girl want to run home and change.

Giovanna Bataglia

Working as the senior fashion editor for Vogue Japan and contributing fashion editor for W Magazine keeps Battaglia pretty busy, as she regularly styles editorials for both magazines. However, with friends like fashion goddess, Anna Dello Russo, who she worked with at L’Uomo Vogue, it’s not hard to see the motivation to always be on point. Known for her amazing since of style, Giovanna Battaglia can usually be found rocking only the latest designer fashions.  Having been born and raised in Milan, Italy, Battaglia’s Italian roots are ever present in the playful way she styles her looks.

Giovanna Battaglia

Last summer, Battaglia’s marriage to Oscar Engelbert was hailed as the most over the top wedding of that year. Over the course of a weekend , the celebration consisted of four events which included a welcome dinner, a the wedding ceremony, the party after the wedding, and one more party the night after all held in Capri, Italy. In the case of Battaglia, every occasion meant another showstopping outfit. Having worn dresses by designers like Thom Browne, Alexander McQueen and Valentino, the wardrobe nearly outshined the wedding.

It’s amazing to sit back and acknowledge the level of creativity Giovanna Battaglia showcases daily, however it is that creativity that keeps clients like Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors, and Saks Fifth Avenue coming back to get her creative hand in their various campaigns. But that really is what all of this boils down to. Some people in the world are just naturally more creative than others and showcase them differently. Some people can paint murals or write songs. When talking about Giovanna Battaglia, her creativity is in her abilty to turn herself into walking art through her extravagant wardrobe.

#Fashion Crush-Wiz Khalifa (@wizkhalifa)

Wiz Khalifa

With a knack for creating feel good music and a style that is all his own, how could you not love a guy like Wiz Khalifa?

Born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, Wiz Khalifa has seen his career rise steadily ever since his first record deal with Warner Bros. in 2008. Khalifa left the record company a year later after having minor success with a couple of mixtapes. It wasn’t until he signed with Atlantic Records a year later that he achieved worldwide success with his first single Black and Yellow.

Wiz Khalifa

Since then, Wiz Khalifa has remained at the forefront of the rap scene, having released five successful studio albums and starring in movies, such as cult classic Mac & Devin Go to High School alongside Snoop Dogg.

Wiz Khalifa

As impressive as his career has been, one thing that has been amazing to observe is Khalifa’s style transformation. At the start of his career, Wiz Khalifa’s style was a sort of urban street style. Oversized t-shirts or hoodies paired with baggie jeans or shorts and his small afro with the small patch of blonde in the front, fit in well with the other rappers of the time, though even then one could tell he was a budding ‘fashionisto’.  Nowadays, he has adopted a more alternative style of dress. A new age Jimmie Hendrix if you will.

Wiz Khalifa

Now sporting locs, Khalifa’s main ‘uniform’ consists of a printed or solid colored button up which is almost always unbuttoned to the navel, displaying his amazing tattoos and some sort of extravagant neck jewelry. One could argue that his mainstream success and his sense of style has gone hand in hand. Of course the main source of his staying power has been his ability to relate to people through his music. However, it’s probably more appeasing to upper class parents when the rappers their children are listening to have a sense of style.

#FashionCrush- Michael Lockley (@michaellockleyy)

Michael Lockley

The self proclaimed ‘Golden Child’ Michael Lockley is a breath of fresh air to the fashion world.

It’s often hard as a young African American boy to find others like yourself to look up to, especially in the realm of fashion.  That source of inspiration has manifested itself in the ultra fabulous Michael Lockley. Standing at 6’2 and rocking his signature blonde afro, it’s hard to miss the 19 year old on the the hottest runways.

Michael Lockley

Hailing from Brooklyn, Lockley’s personal style is one to be envied. His glam style is reminiscent of Prince or even David Bowie. With his slim frame, it’s easy for him to pull off skin tight jeans, chelsea boots and usually a statement making coat. Lockley looks so good in his clothes, he even makes t-shirts and shorts look as if a world famous stylist put it together.

Michael Lockley

A favorite amongst the street style world, you can expect to see Michael Lockley on any and every fashion blog. His appeal seems to be his willingness to experiment with different looks. Never afraid to turn up the glam or even wear things that may not have been intended for men, his style surpasses gender specificity.  Of course, when you consider the fact that he is in the fashion industry, it would be less than smart for a young man to not learn something when it comes to fashion, or more importantly how it’s styled.

Michael Lockley

It’s easy to look at Michael Lockley and feel as if you have to be tall and skinny to look as good as him. What should be taken away from his inspiration is that the beauty is in the styling. Anyone can put on clothes, however to look as if you’ve just come from a photoshoot for GQ is a talent in itself. For Michael Lockley, one thing that is certain is if modelling doesn’t work out, there is always a future in fashion editing.

#Fashion Crush – Carmen Dell’Orefice (@CDellOrefice)

Carmen Dell'Orefice

Whoever said models had to be young obviously never heard of Carmen Dell’Orefice.

At 86, Dell’Orefice has had an impressive modelling career that has spanned seven decades. In 1946, at just 15, having just been signed, the New York City born Carmen Dell’Orefice landed her first cover of Vogue.  With her statuesque frame and her one of a kind features she quickly became a favorite of top photographers of the time like Richard Avedon and Francesco Scavullo.

Carmen Dell'Orefice on the October 1947 cover of Vogue

After all of her success, she was dropped by her agent, possibly due to her small frame which required medical attention.  Upon receiving her estrogen shots, Dell’Orefice’s new curves allowed her to make a resurgence modelling lingerie for $300 an hour.  Carmen modeled through the 50’s, however, after her second marriage to Richard Heimann in 1958, she decided to retire altogether from modelling.

Carmen Dell'Orefice

In 1978, a three time divorced Dell’Orefice found herself in need of money which restarted her modelling career. For the next two decades, she modeled for various campaigns and magazines.  In the 80’s and 90’s, Carmen experienced more financial loss after losing most of her money in the stock market. The rest of her money was lost in a scheme involving Bernie Madoff who was best friends with her boyfriend of 12 years Norman F. Levy. Upon Levy’s death in 2006, Dell’Orefice discovered that Madoff had scammed away almost all of Levy’s $244 million fortune.

Carmen Dell'Orefice

Despite all of her obstacles, Carmen Dell’Orefice always manages to carry herself with elegance and grace. She still models here and there though as of late most of her citings are out and about at parties. Her style is never any less than perfection still able to wear top designers and the finest jewelry. Carmen Dell’Orefice’s life can be a true testament that no matter how big the obstacle, it’s never too late to dust yourself off and reinvent yourself.
