Power Rangers (@ThePowerRangers) Movie To Feature First Openly Gay & Autistic Superheroes!

power rangers movie cast

The movement for inclusion and representation of all types of people continues to make waves and break new ground. This time around the frontier moves beyond the superhero/action adventure genre in the upcoming Power Rangers movie.

Yep, one of the Power Rangers will become cinema’s first openly gay superhero, and another will be on the autism spectrum!

The news broke earlier today, much to the surprise of fans and moviegoers everywhere. “Trini Kwan,” the Yellow Ranger,  portrayed by Becky G., will apparently be a lesbian in the film, but a fledgling one, meaning she is just coming to realize and accept her sexual orientation. Meanwhile, “Billy Cranston,” the Blue Ranger, played by RJ Cyler is on the autism spectrum. This definitely falls in line with the film’s motif of the Rangers being outcasts and different in high school.

Power Rangers is breaking down a barrier no superhero movie has before. The Lionsgate reboot of the ’90s children’s TV show is the first big-budget superhero movie to feature an LGBT protagonist.

During Power Rangers‘ second act, there’s a scene in which the titular heroes learn that the Yellow Ranger, Trini (Becky G), is coming to terms with her sexual orientation, with one character assuming she’s having “boyfriend problems,” and soon realizing that perhaps she’s actually having “girlfriend problems.” It’s a small moment, but one director Dean Israelite calls “pivotal” for the entire film.

“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is,” Israelite tells The Hollywood Reporter. “She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

the white house

The subject matter they can turn into movies defies human logic. Then again when you have movies like Soul Plane, Snakes On A Plane, or Howard The Duck, then you know just about anything can have its moment in cinematic history.

Well now it looks like there is a new comedy on the horizon, a film based on the Obama-Era White House!

Yep, you read right, a comedy about President Barack Obama’s eight year stint in the White House is on its way!

A former White House stenographer and Universal Pictures have joined forces to bring the people an Obama-era White House Comedy film!

So, according to The Hollywood Reporter, From The Corner of the Oval is a two part deal! We hear Beck Dorey-Stein, the former stenographer, has pitched the idea of a book–also titled “The Corner of the Oval” which got picked up by Universal to turn into a film.

Long story short, the storyline follows a waitress who ended up working in the White House. Short story long, the waitress, a woman, lives in Washington, D.C. and is at an “all-time career low;” but life couldn’t keep her down. Life takes a turn for her which landed her in the White House “navigating a series of misadventures in life and love.” There is not concrete air date for the movie–however we hear that the book will be published in 2018.

I know you’re wondering: “how much will the film focus on the Obamas?!” I had the same thought!

The Jasmine Brand reports that the movie will focus less on the fort family, and more on the White House and it’s staffer

We are not sure how to feel about this film, but right now we can all use some laughter and I’m sure there were some pretty crazy things that went down in The Oval Office during Obama’s time. Will you be watching? Comment below?

#ThrowbackThursday: Is There a ‘Scarface’ Remake in the Works?

Whether you are familiar with the film or not, “say hello to my little friend” is a phrase you probably are familiar with, from the one and only Tony Montana in Scarface.

Scarface has gone down in history as a classic film. The 1983 crime film was directed by Brian de Palma, produced by Marty Bregman, written by Oliver Stone and starred Al Pacino who had an extraordinary performance playing the role of Antonio ‘Tony’ Montana.

Tony Montana arrives in Miami from Cuba with nothing to his name. Montana has one hell of a journey, eventually becoming the biggest drug lord in the state, providing cocaine for dealers around the world. As Tony rises to ‘success’ in the drug business, a target on his head seems to get bigger and the pressure is on by everyone from the police to the Colombians.

Smooches? Jussie Smollett (@jussiesmollett) Presents HRC Equality Award to Lee Daniels (@leedanielsent) & Castmates; Talks Donald Trump!

The shock factor surrounding any awards show nowadays is always there and controversial! Empire was honored at the Human Rights Campaign Gala in Los Angeles with the HRC Equality Award. There, Jussie Smollett presented it to Lee Daniels and his cast mates. Although the cast was honored to receive the prestigious award, it was overshadowed by a kiss between Lee and Jussie, and then the latter’s comments on Donald Trump.

“I’m not afraid of anything,” Daniels said. “I’ve dodged bullets — real bullets before — but now I’m afraid because these motherf—ers are coming for us, y’all.”

Speaking at the Human Rights Campaign Gala in L.A. on Saturday night, Daniels pressed the audience “to do the right thing” and vote for Hillary Clinton. While he never mentioned Trump by name, he said during his remarks: “He’s taking over — he’s coming in to take us down, y’all, and this is serious business. Let’s do the right thing and make sure Clinton is in that f—ing office and taking care of us.”

“I don’t think you realize how much they’re coming for us,” Daniels added. “And this is not a joke. I’ve watched everyone make light of what is going on. They are coming for every one of you. White people are not excluded — they’re coming for us.”

Empire was being honored by the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT civil rights advocacy group, and Daniels was on hand along with Empire showrunner Ilene Chaiken and cast members Jussie Smollett, Gabourey Sidibe, Serayah, Kaitlin Doubleday and Ta’Rhonda Jones. The outspoken co-creator of the Fox show has been known not to hold back in discussingHIV/AIDSand homophobia as well as race in Hollywood

“It’s time for us to do the right thing. I’m not laughing; this ain’t funny,” Daniels said.

We agree with Jussie’s sentiments about Trump; but what is really going on between him and Lee? Check out Jussie’s full speech and comment below!

Dr. Dre (@drdre) to Star in Apple’s First Original Television Series!

It looks as if Apple is gearing up and getting ready to tackle new avenues. Word on the street is that Apple is developing it’s first original television programming – and scripted television is looking like the way they’re going.

via The Hollywood Reporter:

Multiple sources say the 50-year-old mogul is starring in and executive producing his own six-episode vehicle, dubbed Vital Signs, and the production is being bankrolled by Apple. The series likely will be distributed via Apple Music, the company’s subscription streaming site, but it’s not clear if Apple TV, the iTunes store or other Apple platforms (or even a traditional television distributor) will be involved. Apple and a rep for Dre declined to comment.

Those who have seen descriptions of the Dr. Dre show say it is billed as semi-autobiographical, with each episode focusing on a different emotion and how Dre’s character deals with it. Sources say that Sam Rockwell and Mo McRae (Murder in the First) are among the additional cast.

While technically a half-hour, the show is not a comedy. Instead, it is described as a dark drama with no shortage of violence and sex. In fact, an episode filming Monday and Tuesday this week featured an extended orgy scene. Sources tell THR naked extras simulated sex in a mansion in the Bird Streets neighborhood of Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills. (Dre’s wife Nicole Young was on set to witness the shenanigans, one insider says.)

Veteran music video director Paul Hunter is helming Vital Signs, which is also being produced under his Eye Candy Banner alongside producers Aaron Ginsburg and William Green. Empire co-exec producer/writer Robert Munic was hand-picked by Dre to write all six episodes and exec produce. The first season will roll out all at once, regardless of venue, a la Netflix. Apple is said to be very bullish on the project.
